Power to the Entrepreneurs!

Let’s face it: changing public policy can be challenging. It takes time, effort, and know-how.

Luckily, for entrepreneurs and those who support entrepreneurship, entrepreneurs have three key sources of power that increase their influence and strengthen their ability to affect change.

1.      Esteem | Entrepreneurs and small business owners are highly regarded. According to Gallup, 68% of Americans say they have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in small businesses—more than organized religion (31%), public schools (28%), newspapers (16%), and big businesses (14%). Entrepreneurs’ perspectives carry weight. When they speak, others are inclined to listen.

2.      Value | Entrepreneurs create value by solving problems, creating jobs, and increasing the quality of life in Missouri communities. The more lawmakers understand the value of entrepreneurship and how it helps Missouri, the more influence entrepreneurs have over public policy. After all, who doesn’t want more jobs, innovative solutions, and a higher quality of life?

3.      Votes | Lawmakers have an incentive to be responsive to the needs of their constituents—including entrepreneurs. When entrepreneurs make their voice heard, lawmakers become aware that these constituents are engaged. The squeaky wheel gets the grease—right?

Recognizing one’s power can help advocates overcome doubt, fear, and timidity about speaking up.
